This makes me wonder if Apple will also stop shipping other products with a charging cable in the future. In Brazil, Apple was fined for selling the iPhone charger separately. However, the company’s decision was widely criticized around the world. Of course, you can find much cheaper options from third parties, but having to buy a new cable just to recharge an accessory seems rather inconvenient.īack in 2020, Apple stopped shipping iPhone and Apple Watch with the power adapter as the company says this will help reduce carbon emissions and electronic waste. Although USB-C is an open standard and you can use any cable you want, this will force a number of customers to buy a new cable just to recharge the remote control once the battery runs out.Īpple sells a 1-meter USB-C cable (which has now been upgraded to a braided version) for $19. Previous generations of Apple TV shipped with a Lightning to USB-A cable so users could recharge the Siri Remote’s internal battery. Apple’s website makes it clear that the new Apple TV comes with the Siri Remote and power cable in the box, while the HDMI and USB-C cables are sold separately. The bad news, however, is that the Apple TV no longer comes with a charging cable for the Siri Remote in the box. This means that users can finally use the same cable to charge an iPad, Mac, Siri Remote, and any other USB-C-equipped accessory. The only difference is that this year’s Siri Remote has a USB-C port for charging instead of Lightning. The new Siri Remote looks exactly like the previous one introduced last year. Apple TV no longer ships with the Siri Remote charging cable While this is certainly good news, the company will no longer ship a charging cable with the product. It also comes with a new Siri Remote that has a USB-C port instead of Lightning. It's not user-friendly and it doesn't align with the environmental credentials that Apple has been touting.Along with the new iPads, Apple also announced on Tuesday a new generation of Apple TV 4K with the A15 Bionic chip and HDR10+. iFixit says the process is overcomplicated and one that will "scar the beautiful aluminium housing if you're not careful." Presumably, Apple wants to charge people for it somehow - or is perhaps just hoping they'll buy another remote when the time comes. In short, while it is technically possible to replace the battery in the second-generation Siri Remote, it is clearly not intended to be done by the user. That means those need to be detached and reattached to any new battery. Removing the battery brings the lightning port and their cables with it as they are soldered together. Although glued into place, iFixit says it is actually fairly easy to pull out of its housing. With the casing removed, the 1.52 Wh battery was revealed. Once those were unscrewed, it was possible to slide the innards of the remote out of the black casing, albeit with some force. With those elements removed, parts of the interior were revealed, including three torque screws. That meant popping off all of the buttons and removing the touch wheel, all of which appears to be tricky but doable. Having tried the Lightning connector port panel, iFixit looked for the next best possible way into the Siri Remote.
